Dominick Cruz will be stripped off his bantamweight belt if he will not be ready to defend it by February next year

It seems like bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz will be the last fighter to hold on to his the belt without defending it for a long period of time. The Dominator was injured in May of 2012 and is sidelined up to February next year. That is more than 2 years of inactivity and the champ would probably have fought 3 times if weren’t for the injury. He was supposed to face Urijah Faber in a rematch for the bantamweight belt before he suffered from a torn ACL. He was replaced by Renan Barao and the Brazilian eventually won the interim title. He has defended the belt two times and he won both of those fights in a spectacular fashion. It should also be noted that it is the first time for an interim champion to defend the belt twice.

UFC on Fox 9 gets deeper with the addition of Jamie Varner and Pat Healy

The highly stacked UFC on Fox 9 gets even more loaded with the addition of the lightweight showdown between Jamie Varner and Pat Healy. The two lightweights are known to put up highly entertaining fights and both are recipients of Fight of the Night honors.

Prior to that fight, Healy submitted Jim Miller but the win was overturned when Healy tested positive in marijuana in his post-fight test.  He is 0-2 with 1 No Contest in his UFC career.

The event which will take place on December 14 at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, California is headlined with a lightweight title bout between Anthony Pettis and Josh Thomson. It also features several top names in the UFC including former interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit and former title contenders in Urijah Faber, Michael McDonald and Chad Mendes.

Interim bantamweight champ Renan Barao wants to be the best by fighting Dominick Cruz

Fresh from his highlight reel knock out of Eddie Wineland in UFC 165, Renan Barao has told MMAfighting.com that Dana White informed him that he won’t be defending the interim bantamweight in his return to the octagon.

The UFC has decided to strip Dominick Cruz of the regular title if “The Dominator” will not be cleared by the start of 2014. According to Barao, that decision makes a lot of sense since Cruz has been out for 2 years. Cruz last fought in the octagon when he defended his bantamweight title with a unanimous decision win over Demetrious Johnson in October of 2011.

Although Brian Bowles failed to defend his WEC bantamweight title, UFC gaves him another chance to prove his skills by granting a slot on the upcoming UFC 139 against Urijah Faber.

Brian Bowles (10-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) will be facing former WEC featherweight champ, Urijah Faber (25-5 MMA, 0-1 UFC), on UFC 139. While the venue and exact date of the bout are not yet officially announced, most reports claimed that the UFC 139 will take place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California on November 19.

As stated by UFC president, Dana White: “Before a possible trilogy can be considered between Urijah Faber and his rival, champion Dominick Cruz, he will take on one of the division’s truly elite fighters, former bantamweight champion Brian Bowles. A win over Faber would be massive for Bowles’ bid to challenge for the belt that was once his. The stakes are high and the fight will be intense.”
