Cain Velasquez’s Title Defense, Possible Headliner for UFC Houston

Written on May 02, 2011 by Markham Mencken

After being out of the active competition scene since last year, Cain Velasquez is possible to make an Octagon comeback on October.

Last Friday, UFC announced that their next Fan Expo will take place at Houston, Texas on October 7 and 8. The following day, Dana White hinted that they might have found the card’s main event. If people will based it on the UFC president’s reaction, a Cain Velasquez’s title defense is something that they’re taking into consideration.

Last year, Cain Velasquez was able to snatch the UFC heavyweight title from Brock Lesnar. However, he acquired a shoulder injury that requires mending — landing him out of the scene since then.

Dana White already alluded on the champion’s possible return earlier in the week. And with the UFC Houston event penciled for October, it seems like the right time for Cain Velasquez’s title defense.

Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos will battle for a shot on the title at UFC 131 on June 11 in Vancouver, after their TUF 13 coaching stint. Then, assuming everyone is healthy and good to go, UFC can set the title fight for the UFC Houston event.

Written on January 17, 2011 by John Paul Vill

The Ultimate Fighting Championship puts an 'X' mark on July 2 for its Las Vegas event. However, the July Fan Expo is not yet confirmed.

The UFC organization will hold an event on July, however the UFC Fan Expo is not yet on the list.

Close sources said UFC may not yet pursue a previously discussed July UFC Fan Expo event at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center though the company still intends to host a fight card at the same place on July 2. Though the company has not yet confirmed the event, the July fight will most likely be UFC 132.

Sources could not say any significant insights on real reason why UFC hasn’t finalized booking of the first U.S.-based UFC Fan Expo of 2011, it is widely believed that UFC officials simply looks for a later date this year. It is because somehow the event coincides with the first-ever Canadian UFC Fan Expo together with April’s UFC 129 event.

UFC attained a massive growth this year plus garnered prestigious awards like Best Promotion and Best Positioned Property. The promotion is truly a crowd's favorite.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship attained a good profile this year. The promotion got the best position for 2011 than any other sports organization.

The said conclusion was according to 1,100 senior-level sports executives who took part in the latest Turnkey Sports Poll. The UFC lead orgs such as the IZOD IndyCar Series, the X Games, Professional Bull Riders (PBR), the United Football League (UFL) and the WNBA.

Voters, who come from the pro and college ranks, can choose from essentially every professional sports organization outside of veteran leagues such as MLB, NBA, NFL, NASCAR, MLS and the PGA. The UFC was the only mixed-martial-arts promotion available as a voting option.

The organization which ended the season with a ground-breaking UFC 124 earned three times as many votes as its competitors. UFC has hosted 24 events in 2010, which is the same number it hosted in its first six years of existence. This year alone UFC president Dana White was a featured speaker at both the Microsoft CEO Summit 2010 and the Oxford Union Society, and he won the 2010 “Game Changer Award” from the entertainment industry’s PromaxBDA organization.

Plus, the UFC again won the “Best Promotion” award on the 2010 World MMA Awards, and White again picked up the “Leading Man” trophy.

And as if 2010 wasn’t big enough, the UFC plans to host an additional eight shows in 2011, two new weight classes have been added thanks to the merge with WEC , and an expanded deal with Versus complements the promotion’s existing pay-per-view and Spike TV offerings.

The official Turnkey Sports Poll results included:

Which sports properties are you paying more attention to now than you did at the start of the year?
