Dana White praises Andre Fili despite missing weight for UFC 166
UFC 166’s Andrew Fili puts on an impressive performance when he stopped Jeremy Larsen in his octagon debut
Andre Fili, the only fighter who missed weight in the recently held UFC 166 has received an exemption from UFC president Dana White. According to White, there will be no hard feelings for Fili missing weight. After all, the team Alpha Male member has took the fight in 10 days notice as a replacement for the injured Charles Oliveira.
Fili tipped the scales at 148.5 lbs, 2.5 lbs over the welterweight limit of 146. He was given 2 hours to shed the excess weight but Fili elected to forfeit 20 percent of his purse instead. Dana White, who is known for enforcing strict rules regarding weight issues, expressed his thoughts on Andrew Fili.
“He was like, ‘I’ll never miss weight again” states White in the post-event news conference for UFC 166. “I’m like, ‘We respect you taking this fight.’ The kid was fighting in another show at a higher weight class and came in and cut all this weight to come into this fight tonight.”
Fili won the said bout with TKO victory over Jeremy Larsen. Larsen may not be a top rated featherweight but his experience against tougher opposition makes it hard for White to take away anything from the 23 year old fighter. White also denies that the weight advantage played into Fili’s favor, in fact, it is the other way around according to the UFC president.
“He looked awesome,” White said. “When you get into a situation like that, and you’re like, ‘Wow, well this kid was able to come in at this weight’ – well he loses a piece of his purse, but he was actually at a bigger disadvantage in that fight because of all the weight he had to cut in such a short amount of time, and taking the fight on short notice. So I have a lot of respect for guys who do that.”
