Rafael dos Anjos: I’m one win away from a titleshot
Rafael dos Anjos believes that a win over TJ Grant will put him closer to a lightweight titleshot
Rafael dos Anjos believes that he is one win away before getting his first ever UFC titleshot and he wants TJ Grant for that fight. The product of Kings MMA has racked up 5 wins in a row when he outpointed Donald Cerrone last August in the undercard of the Condit-Kampmann rematch.
“One more win and I should fight for the title,” says dos Anjos. “I won my last five fights. I’m in the UFC for five years, so I deserve a shot at the title after my next win.”
Meanwhile, the fighter he wants, TJ Grant is still recovering from an injury that cost him two titleshots. Grant was supposed to challenge then-champion Benson Henderson but was forced to pull out due to a concussion that he suffered during training. He would later reject the title fight against Anthony Pettis due to the same injury. Dos Anjos believes that Grant has already lost his opportunity to fight for a title and therefore should not be given an immediate shot upon his return.
“T.J. had two title shots and got injured twice,” he said. “I think it’s too little for him now, I believe it would be fair if he has to do another fight first, and a fight against me makes sense. It would be a good fight, and I would be one step closer to the title.
If his plans indeed happen, he will probably face the winner of the Pettis-Thomson lightweight title fight on December 14. Rafael also revealed his views regarding the bout.
“I don’t know much about Josh Thomson, but Anthony Pettis is the favorite,” he said. “He’s younger, is doing great in his last fights. I’d bet on Pettis.”
