Dong Hyun Kim admits that he got lucky with Erick Silva
Dong Hyun Kim is surprised with the KO win over Silva
The Korean Stun Gun shocked the whole Ginasio Jose Correa stadium in the supporting bout of UFC Fight Night 29. Going into the fight, Erick Silva was believed to be the next welterweight star. He is the heavy favorite to win the fight against his Korean opponent. However, his rise to stardom was momentarily halted when Dong Hyun Kim stopped him in the second round of their welterweight matchup.
The fight showcased back and forth actions from the opening bell. Both fighters started out strong with Silva gaining the better of the Korean. He landed the more telling blows and thwarted several takedown attempts of his opponent. Kim was visibly gassed in the early parts of the second round while the Brazilian starts to land strikes at will. It seems that Silva is on his way to win the fight but out of nowhere, Kim landed a vicious left hook just as Silva lands a punch of his own. The one-hit quitter knocked Silva out of his consciousness and the fight is waved off with 3:01 remaining in the second round.
In an interview later, Kim admitted that he did not expect the fight to end the way it did:
“Erick Silva was very strong. He started very aggressive, and it was a war. I needed to fight against him, or I was going to lose. So I was trying to make Erick lose his strength. But I think it was luck that I finished the fight by knockout.”
The upset is the first stoppage loss in Silva’s entire MMA career. His record now stands at 15 – 4 (3 – 3 UFC) while Kim improves to 18 – 2 (9 – 2 UFC). Kim also earned his first Knockout of the night bonus with the KO win.
