Maia expects a title shot if he wins convincingly against Jake Shields
Demian Maia believes a title shot is next if he beats Jake Shields in an exciting fashion
Sao Paolo, Brazil – BJJ black belt Demian Maia expects that he will get the winner of George St-Pierre vs. Johny Hendricks if he beats Jake Shields in an impressive fashion tomorrow at UFC Fight Night 29. Maia is on a tear since dropping to 170 lbs. He won all three of his welterweight bouts against notable oppositions in Dong Hyun Kim, Rick Story and most recently Jon Fitch. After an open training in Barurei Brazil, Meia spoke to the media and says that he is anticipating a title fight if he wins against Shields.
“I hope I can get the chance after I win,” Maia said. “It will be four wins in a row. I’ve already fought for the title in the middleweight (division), so I’ll be better ranked. The other fighters ranked higher than me already fought for the (welterweight) title.”
His opponent Jake Shields has fought for the welterweight title in 2011, he dropped a unanimous decision loss to GSP in that fight. Like Maia, he also won his last three fights but his latest win over Ed Herman was overturned to No Contest after failing the post-fight test.
“Shields is not well ranked not but he already defeated Carlos Condit, a former UFC interim champion, and he’s a former Strikeforce champion,” he said. “The rankings don’t mean much, but I believe I’ll be able to earn a title shot with a win. I don’t see another fighter to fight.”
Maia will be fighting in front of his country man and he is also the favorite (-260) to win the fight. The Brazilian told the media that he likes fighting under pressure and that it will help boost his performance come fight night.
“I like to fight under pressure, and it will be huge here,” Maia said. “I know a lot of people here and this pressure will help me to perform well there. I think that if I submit him, I’ll get closer to the title.”
