Maia and Shields winner likely to land in a “good spot” in welterweight division
There is a lot at stake in the upcoming showdown between Demian Maia and Jake Shields
The upcoming UFC Fight Night 29 that will be headlined by Demian Maia and Jake Shields has not yet generated any buzz with just one week left prior to its schedule. Both fighters have not been in the main event for a period of time. Maia’s last was his middleweight title shot against Anderson Silva more than 3 years ago while Shield’s last headliner is a first round KO loss to Jake Ellenberger in 2011. However, UFC president Dana White believes that the showdown between the two accomplished grapplers is an important fight in the welterweight division.
“It’s a big fight and it’s a fun fight, too. These guys are stylistically matched up very well.” told White to a group of reporters in Rio de Janeiro.
Demian Maia is out to prove that he is a force to be reckoned with in the welterweight division. He is currently riding on a 3 fight winning streak with 2 of those fights ending before the final bell. He has submitted both Dong Hyun Kim and Rick Story and has won a lopsided decision over Jon Fitch. Jake Shields meanwhile is 3-2 with 1 NC in his octagon campaign. He’s been highly regarded as a welterweight prospect in his pre-UFC career but has been lackluster since he joined the promotion.
White has not stated that the winner of the bout will get the winner of St. Pierre vs. Hendricks but he has noted that the victor will be getting more significant fights in the events to come.
UFC Fight Night 29 will be held on October 9, 2013 at the Ginasio Jose Correa in Barueri, Brazil. The main card will be broadcasted by Fox Sports 1 while the prelim cards will be streamed live in Facebook and YouTube.
