Renan Barao wants to prove that he is the number 1 bantamweight in the UFC
Interim bantamweight champ Renan Barao wants to be the best by fighting Dominick Cruz
Fresh from his highlight reel knock out of Eddie Wineland in UFC 165, Renan Barao has told MMAfighting.com that Dana White informed him that he won’t be defending the interim bantamweight in his return to the octagon.
The UFC has decided to strip Dominick Cruz of the regular title if “The Dominator” will not be cleared by the start of 2014. According to Barao, the decision makes a lot of sense since Cruz has been out for 2 years. Cruz last fought in the octagon when he defended his bantamweight title with a unanimous decision win over Demetrious Johnson in October of 2011.
Even though he agrees with the decision, the Brazilian has pointed out that he prefers to take the title from Cruz by fighting him rather than be awarded the belt due to Dominick’s injury.
“I’m rooting for him to recover so we can fight,” he said. “A lot of people want to watch us fight. Our goal is to give the fans this fight. Fighting him would be better than just earning the title with him being stripped so no one would ever say I haven’t fought him.” states Barao.
Barao also stated that he is confident that he is UFC’s best 135 pounder. He has won all of his fights in the promotion and has not been beaten since he lost his professional debut in 2005. The 26 year old Brazilian holds victories over notable fighters like Urjiah Faber and Michael McDonald. His spinning back kick KO of Eddie Wineland is his first knock out win since joining UFC in 2011.
