Leandro Souza dies before the official weigh in of Shooto 43
Shooto 43 was supposed to be held in Brasilia, Brazil was cancelled after the death of Leandro Souza, a fighter that was featured in the cards of the event.
The 26 year old Souza is a fighter from Nova Uniao, whose notable fighters include two division title holder BJ Penn, current featherweight champ Jose Aldo and interim bantamweight belt holder Renan Barao.
Andre Santos, a teammate of Souza has told MMAfighting.com that Souza was called in short notice and has to cut 33 pounds in less than a week. Santos also pointed out that he was trying to shed off 2 more pounds before he collapsed in the sauna. He was taken to a hospital in Rio de Janeiro and was later pronounced dead.
“It is with great regret that we hereby report the death of Leandro athlete Caetano de Souza. The athlete died in UPA of Botafogo. The reasons are not yet of our knowledge. We would like to express condolences to all friends and family.”
Later, a report to Brazilian news organization UOL indicates that the fighter died from stroke. The cause of stroke however, has not been confirmed.View Article Source »
