Japanese MMA veteran Akihiro Gono has announced his retirement from the sport, after losing to Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler at the recently concluded Bellator 67 event. Gono lost to Chandler via TKO, just 56 seconds into the fight.
Gono aired his decision at the post-event press conference of last Saturday’s event. He received a standing ovation after his emotional announcement.
Gono boasts of one of the longest and most colorful career in MMA. He made his professional debut back in 1994 and fought for various organizations PRIDE, Shooto, Pancrase and World Victory Road/Sengoku, UFC and Bellator. Though he never earned a major title, he’s one of only two men to defeat Lombard and one of just three to defeat Mousasi. He bids MMA goobye with a three-fight losing skid.View Article Source »
