Strikeforce Dropping Its Heavyweight Division in 2012

Strikeforce announces the discontinuation of its heavyweight division to concentrate on remaining weight classes.
Strikeforce president Scott Coker has just announced that Strikeforce will discontinue its heavyweight division by 2012.
The announcement was made on Thursday over a press conference on the recent Strikeforce-Showtime deal, where Coker revealed that the promotion will soon concludes its Heavyweight Grand Prix and focus on remaining weight divisions.
“What you’ll see after the event with the tournament finals between Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier, you’ll see one more fight where the winner will fight a top-rated heavyweight and then we’re going to go back to focusing on our other weight classes,” Scott Coker said.
UFC President Dana White agrees with Coker’s decision and points out the division’s ‘lack of depth’ as the reason behind its demise.
