What’s next with Matt Hughes After UFC 135?
“After this fight, win or lose doesn’t matter, I’ll talk to the UFC and we’ll figure out what we’re gonna do." --- Matt Hughes
Matt Hughes is carrying 54 professional bouts on his resume. He held the UFC welterweight championship belt twice, he had seven title defenses, and he is a UFC Hall of Fame inductee. With UFC 135 as his last fight of contract, what lies ahead for Matt Hughes? Short and sweet, the answer really is… Nothing.
However, the 37-year-old fighter remains a staple in the promotion. Matt Hughes will make a come back in the Octagon after a 10-month layoff at UFC 135 against Josh Koscheck. His original opponent, Diego Sanchez, stepped out of the match due to broken hand. And while Matt Hughes loves his life inside the Octagon, constantly testing his skills against increasingly younger opponents, how long will his competition be enough?
Away from fighting, he also enjoys his time with his family, he has a farm, has an autobiography out, and takes part in number of publications and programs that deals with hunting — another of his passion.
His match against Josh Koscheck at UFC 135 will mark the last fight of his current contract with the organization. So with that, and the pressure from his family, will it finally be enough for Matt Hughes to call it a day and step up his pursuits out of the Octagon? Matt Hughes replied:
“After this fight, win or lose doesn’t matter, I’ll talk to the UFC and we’ll figure out what we’re gonna do. My wife tells me I’m done fighting. She wanted me to quit after the BJ (Penn) fight.
“So, we’ll just see what I feel like, and we’ll see what the UFC wants to do. But this is the last fight on the contract, so it doesn’t matter what happens Saturday.”
So despite turning 38 in less than a month from now, if he wanted to continue, it wouldn’t be a stretch for him to do so. His next pursuit remains to be seen.View Article Source »
