Nick Diaz Out; Carlos Condit, New Welterweight Contender
After not showing on Last Wednesday's press con in Las Vegas, UFC President - Dana White - scrapped Nick Diaz in his UFC 137 bout with GSP.
Carlos Condit has replaced Nick Diaz, and will now face welterweight champion – Georges St-Pierre – at next month’s UFC 137. At a press conference in Las Vegas last Wednesday, UFC President – Dana White – announced the news and cited difficulties in getting Nick Diaz to show up for scheduled media events.
“He looked me right in my face and lied to me and told me he’d do [the promotional commitments]. Nick Diaz can’t handle the pressure of a major main event. … That’s what I think.”
Carlos Condit was supposed to meet BJ Penn in a UFC 137 co-main event. But due to changes in the fight card, their supposed match was scrapped from the tournament. The UFC President cleared out that he will talk to BJ Penn about a possible next fight.
Moreover, Dana White expressed his disappointment with Nick Diaz, who no-showed in last Tuesday’s press con in Toronto. The fighter, for an opportunity to fight against GSP, left Strikeforce and vacated his welterweight title to re-sign with UFC.
“I’ve had my reservations about this kid. Nick Diaz has lost his opportunity at the welterweight championship, and Carlos Condit has gotten it.”
The UFC President also told MMAJunkie that he’s not sure if Nick Diaz will get future fights in the promotion, so he hasn’t counted out the possibility that the former Strikeforce welterweight champ will still fight for the promotion. Regardless, Dana White said that Carlos Condit wanted the opportunity against Georges St-Pierre. In fact, the new contender started crying to be tapped as the next challenger because he was too happy. Georges St-Pierre, on the other hand, was baffled by Nick Diaz’s no-show. However, he was pleased to have Carlos Condit as his new opponent.
UFC 137: GSP vs Condit will take place on October 29 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main event, which features a welterweight title scrap between GSP and Carlos Condit, will air on pay-per-view.View Article Source »
