UFC Fights that Fans Want to See in 2011
While the early part of 2011 is already stacked with top names and fights, it seems appropriate to look at some of the other fights that could hit the Octagon in 2011.
With UFC stacking top names and fights early on this year, the promotion already slated a rematch between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard after their bout ended to a draw. With the rematch in place, and with Anderson Silva set to defend his title against Vitor Belfort, it seems appropriate to see some other fights that could hit the Octagon this 2011.
The Lightweight Title picture has taken a twist with Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard’s recent draw. This outcome has deprived Anthony Pettis of a title match against the recent champion, and a proposed UFC-WEC unification bout. While some news stated that Anthony Pettis is set to face Clay Guida, the UFC-WEC bout is something fans are hoping to see this year. Should Frankie Edgar retain his title and Anthony Pettis pass through his UFC debut, then the division’s youngest stars can do battle and finally unify the UFC and WEC Lightweight titles.
It was announced this week that Junior Dos Santos and Brock Lesnar will head the two houses of The Ultimate Fighter season 13. This pairing can have serious implications with the Heavyweight Title picture. After the coaching stint, Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos will lock horns to see who will be Cain Velasquez’s first title contender. The Cain Velasquez vs Junior Dos Santos match will be one of the most ferocious heavyweight fights that UFC will ever put up. That is, if Junior Dos Santos can get past Brock Lesnar.
Both Mauricio Rua and Jon Jones had an impressive 2010. Jon Jones was able to defeat Brandon Vera and Vladimir Matyunshenko, while Mauricio Rua is now emulating the old “Shogun” that fans enjoyed for so long. Should both of them win their respective fights, the next title match will be more than just a fantasy. With the two of them possessing tremendous Muay Thai skills, their fans will be the real winner here — if this explosive fight comes to fruition.
With Urijah Faber shedding off some pounds, UFC already have some options for a mega-fight with their all-new bantamweight division. With reigning champion, Dominick Cruz, undergoing surgery and will be out for an estimated six months, the Urijah Faber vs Miguel Torres bout is a big possibility. This is the type of match-up that fans would give up their arms and legs a few years ago. And this is the fight that Urijah Faber and Miguel Torres will put on the performance of their lives.
George St-Pierre vs Anderson Silva
Now this is the type of match that fans would like to see this 2011. Even here at Fighting Insider, we are itching to see when this pound-for-pound fight will ever happen. This fight will, once and for all, decide who’s the real pound-for-pound fighter in the history of MMA. But in order to level the playing field down to a war of skill sets, the bout is ideal to take place between 175 – 180 lbs. This fight would pit two warriors in a historic occasion.
