James Toney: I See Fear in Randy Couture’s Eyes
James Toney said he saw fear in Randy "The Legend" Couture's eyes. Let's see if this fear will make Toney win the fight.
“I seen fear,” Toney said when interviewed last Thursday’s media workout session. “I smelled it, too. Everybody can sit there and say, ‘Oh, Randy was tough. He was cool.’ All the Randy Couture fans were [saying that]. Up close and personal, you could see it in his eyes. He ain’t never seen nobody like me in his life.”
Toney and Couture had no chance for another meeting last Thursday because UFC officials follow the traditional way that they prevent fighters from crossing each other’s paths before the fight. But after the staredown at Wednesday’s pre-event presscon, Toney said his confidence is high.
“I’m a whole different species,” Toney said. “I’m something he ain’t never seen before in his [expletive] life. I can knock him out, or I can choke him out – either, or.
“Wherever you want to go, I’m a big, strong dude. I’ve been strong all my life. This is nothing new to me.”
Meanwhile, Toney said that what longtime fans saw before and what they will see now will still make them happy.
“My angles offset what he does easy,” Toney said. “We made a few adjustments, and it’s coming. It’s coming. You’ll like what you see, but it’s still vintage James Toney.”
Of course, new techniques remained in the dark on Thursday. While seven other UFC 118 fighters took part in light workouts for the gathered media, Toney showed up in what he set as $ 400,000 worth of bling and spent 25 minutes talking to journalists rather than stepping into the octagon.
But if you’re trying to read into his decision, Toney says don’t bother.
“I never work out,” Toney said. “I don’t do media days even during boxing events. I never have, and I never will. I don’t want nobody to see what I’m doing – especially all them other clowns from his camp.”
“It is what it is. I’d rather stay down here and let the people know who I am. I think everything went great – according to plan,” Toney said. “I trained hard every day. I trained 14 days on, one day off – well, a half-day because you know I like to work out despite what everybody else says about me. It went good. I’m going to give my a camp a B-plus just because it’s new.”
All this will get to end after UFC 118 is done. Let’s see if this is just a big bunch of showing off from Toney’s side.
“[Couture] will find out,” Toney said. “All he has to do is show up on Saturday night, and he’ll find out. After the fight, ask him. After he wakes up, ask him.
“If Randy tries to stand and trade with me, he gets knocked the [expletive] out.”
